RON is legal in most states, with the number increasing over the past years. Notarization laws
vary by state, and the legal documentation that protects RON also varies by jurisdiction.
As of 2024, 46 states have adopted laws for permanent Remote Online Notarization (RON),
enabling notarizations to be completed online across a wide range of states from Alaska to
Wyoming.
To perform an electronic notarization, notaries must meet strict requirements, including:
- Have a valid notary’s license
- Receive special training
- Online notary platform meets the state's security and identity protection standards
- Maintain an online notary journal
NOTE: States that do not allow RON are California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia,
and North Carolina.
States allowing temporary RON, include Alabama, Mississippi, and Rhode Island.
